Last weekend we took our first trip away from the ARI campus to a town called Nikko. The town is in the mountains not too far from where we are and it is famous for its shrines and natural beauty. It was a great chance to get our feet wet being tourists in Japan.

Anna with the sacred red bridge

5 story pagoda

Stone Lanterns

Hear no evil, Speak no evil, See no evil

Pretty nice entryway

Nice driveway too

Restaurant with business cards and notes on walls

Anna's food (left), Pete's food (right)

Prayer attachment apparatus

Lemon Milk. A specialty in our prefecture. Very very good.

Sweet red bean bun--definitely a highlight

Nikko's hockey team. Their motto seems quintessentially Japanese: Hard Work, Every Day

Whoa, lemon milk! And it’s good, huh? I’m fascinated and now really want to try it. The red bean bun looks delicious.

I gather from the bread-with-jelly pic that you’re having to be really careful about avoiding fish when eating out, Pete? I hope that you’re not having too much trouble.
